Firefighter Training Process
1. Recruitment & Application
The process begins with recruiting qualified candidates. Applicants must meet requirements such as age, medical/physical, and background checks. An interview is also part of the selection process.
2. Fire Academy Training
- Fire behavior and suppression techniques
- Use of firefighting equipment
- Hazardous materials response
- Building construction and fire prevention
- Emergency medical training (CPR)
3. Live Fire & Simulation Exercises
- Interior and exterior fire attacks
- Search and rescue operations
- Ventilation techniques
- Incident command procedures
4. Probationary Period
New firefighters enter a probationary period within the department that lasts at least one year and continues until all required training has been successfully completed.
5. Ongoing Training & Certification
Training doesn’t stop after hiring. Firefighters participate in continuous education, including:
- Regular drills and skill refreshers
- Advanced certifications (e.g., rescue, hazardous materials, fire investigation)
- Leadership and officer development programs
6. Specialized Training Opportunities
- Technical rescue (confined space, rope rescue)
- Water and Ice
- Fire inspection and prevention
- Heavy Rescue and Bush Truck Operations
